Tomatoes

🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅

1🍅 A pastor asked his members to bring some tomatoes in a plastic bag to church.

2.🍅Each tomato was to be given the name of a person whom that member hates.

3.🍅So, the number of tomatoes would be equal to the number of persons they hate.

4.🍅On a pre-determined day, All the members brought their tomatoes well addressed.

5.🍅Some had two, some had three and some had five, some even had 20 tomatoes in accordance with the number of people they hated.

6.🍅The pastor then told them they had to carry the tomatoes with them everywhere they go for two weeks.

7.🍅As the days passed the members started to complain about the decay and smell of the tomatoes.

8.🍅The members who had many tomatoes complained it was very heavy to carry and the smell was too much.

9.🍅After a week, the pastor asked the members “How did you feel this week?”

10.🍅The members complained of the awful smell and heavy weight of the tomatoes, especially those who carried several tomatoes.

11.🍅The pastor said, “This is very similar to what you carry in your heart when you don’t like some people”.

12.🍅Hatred makes the heart unhealthy and you carry that hatred everywhere.

13.🍅If you can’t bear the smell of spoilt tomatoes for a week, imagine the impact of bitterness on your heart as you carry it daily.”

14.🍅The heart is a beautiful garden that needs regular cleaning of unwanted weeds.

15.🍅 Forgive those who have angered you. Matthew 6:14,15

16.🍅This makes room for storing good things.

17.🍅Get Better, Not Bitter!!!

AIthough you may not usually forward text messages, please share to one or two family, friend or a group. They might be motivated to let go and cleanse their heart

Teach a child the way he should go

IF YOU DESIRE TO RAISE CHILDREN WHO WILL GIVE YOU REST OF MIND ALL THROUGH YOUR LIFETIME, READ THIS WRITE UP!

Yesterday we attended an event that changed my perspective on raising kids completely in US. I will try to summarize the key points as it will be helpful to all. The speaker was Dr. Leonard Sax. Even though it was at the Centre it was not related to any religion. The speaker is a Jewish Psychologist and author of a famous book call Collapse of Parenting. He had a lot of statistical information and tips to raise kids in America. Even though it was more focused on American Kids, it applies to bringing up Kids in the Age of Internet and Social Media, the evils of which have spread like an epidemic in the whole world. I can tell you that this was probably the best 3 hour workshop we attended. Even though a big segment was dedicated to social media, it was primarily about raising kids who will go on to have strong character and virtue. I have summarized the points below.

1) Statistically, the biggest indicator of success by age 32, is having self-control at age 12.
Success is determined by a lot of factors namely no drug , no criminal violation, having a stable job, good citizenship etc

2) Make your kids speak their native language at home and with you. Reduce generation gap by involving their grandparents in their lives. If possible try to convince their grand-parents to move in with you.

3) Make them feel proud of their heritage. Kids nowadays are ashamed to talk their language or wear their cultural attire. In a quest to fit in and assimilate they want to no longer associate with their roots.

4) Have a friend circle with folks whose kids also are able to communicate in the same mother tongue. This way the kids can talk the language among themselves.

5) Do not give them smart phones until you know they are responsible. Buy them a dumb phone if required. This phone will fulfill the needs.

6) He went onto compare American society of the 50s to now. The family unit used to be the focus of ads and movies. How media has changed. At that time shows that depict parents as role models having strong moral characters were popular. Now shows like Simpsons etc that show Parents as dumb are popular. Make sure u keep track of things your kids watch. The more they watch shows like this the more they will loose respect for you as a parent.

7) Keep them away from games that promote violence and vice. He talked about Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto. Grand theft auto in particular rewards a person for doing all the wrong stuff like stealing cars and killing people. What kind of character is that going to build. He talked about how violence in games is directly related to gun violence in America with statistical examples.
8) No TV or computers in the bedroom. Kids cannot be in the bedroom with screen whether its school work or something else. Make family room a place where screen time is allowed. Follow the example yourself as well. Bedroom should be a place to go to sleep not to socialize with the outside world.

9) Keep kids away from Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook if possible as long as possible. Put monitoring software on their devices so that every single picture they take or Share , u get notified. Take their phones away at 9 in the night and give it back to them in the morning. Tell them that this is a condition going forward if they would like to keep their phone.

10) Be a peer to them but not a friend. If you become too friendly with the kids, they will start taking you for granted. Speak to them from a place of authority where No means No. When you take away the privileges from kids for their bad actions, they are going to resist. Be firm, remember you are the Parent.

11) Girls according to statistics are greatly influenced by Instagram and snapchat. Girls by nature will always post the good thing happening in their lives. This will create a false illusion among other girls and lead them to think that their life is a mess and make them go into depression. Boys are more influenced by video games. Limit screen time to 20 minutes a day during the week and 1 hour on weekends. But the condition is they complete all their school work. If they do not listen take away their devices.

12) Raise kids with humility. A very important characteristic. This can be inculcated by making them do chores at home even though u can afford maids. He said that the typical thing that parents say is my son/daughter is already so busy I cannot burden him or her. This is a very wrong approach and will make your kids grow up with a feeling of entitlement and selfishness.

13) The biggest detrimental effect of increased screen time or social media is the displacement effect. Which means that the time they are spending on games is the time they are not spending on something useful.

14) Know what kind of music they listen to. The music of these times are ripe with sexual innuendo . Make sure they do not make people like Justin Bieber or Akon as their role models. He gave example of how the chartbuster song last year with some 1 billion or so downloads was filled with the most sexual content imaginable.

15) T-shirts with stuff written with rude and offensive remarks like “I will trade wifi for my Brother”, “I don’t care” etc should not be encouraged. T-shirts of these types when shown in Scotland and Australia, people found it very offensive. He actually talked abt a guy he found wandering the Streets of Australia who was wearing this type of T-shirt . When Dr. Sax approached he found out he was an American visiting Australia.

16) America is one of the leading countries where drugs are given to kids in the name of ADHD and Depression. The statistics he said was the whole of France does not prescribe medicine for these disorders as much as they would do in entire Houston. Any small issues with A Kid, he is treated with anti depression medicine. This is all destroying a generation.

17) He said religion is a very important factor in people’s life. Now a day’s people have made popularity, fame, money etc as their God. When people lack a higher purpose in life then they try to make materialistic things as their end goal.
18) When they surveyed people in the 1980s in America as to what are the 15 most important qualities or characteristics people should possess. Having good character and helping people etc were all top of the list and being famous was on number 15 on the list. Today becoming famous is at number one. Signs of the changing times.

19) There is a big industry that makes phone apps that look like calculators, but when you enter a certain number it opens into an app that shows pornographic images. This way the kids can fool their parents. It goes beyond this. If the kid shakes the phone before handing over to the parent, the app disappears without a trace, not even in the recent list. Unless u download certain monitoring software it will be difficult for parents to keep on top of their kids online activity. Netnanny is one of the software he recommended.

20) The kids who are addicted to online bad video games, when we ask them, are there any changes in their personality, they compare themselves with who are their peers and in similar situation and feel that they are OK, normal. But they are not comparing with normal kids who are not addicted.

22) Having dinner/meal with family is very important. The kids who eat 7 or more times in a week with family vs those who eat alone, there is big difference in their stress level and self control and happiness

23) if you give 20 min screen time to your kids per day and if they don’t use it, those min should not roll over to future dates.

24) Sexting is very common nowadays. It is felony in certain states and kids may end up in jail. If a 16 year old is caught with explicit photos of another 16 year old on his/her phone, he or she will be charged and sent to jail and live as a registered sexual offender for rest of their life. Please make sure your kids are aware of the consequences of these acts.

25) Snapchat photos do not necessarily vanish in 5 sec. There are Apps that circumvent this restriction and allow you to take screen shots of photos without letting the sender know.

26) For current generation ‘how they look’ is more important than ‘who they are’

27) Finally, the Doctor added a very important point. He said Human beings have the longest period of childhood of all Mammals. Horses run Derbys when they are aged 3. This is by design for a reason. God has created human beings to have a long period (18 years) in which they are nurtured and the values re-enforced so that they stick with the individual for the rest of his/her life. Once the formative years are lost it is very difficult for an individual to change.

Feel free to share this information in your friend circle.

Teach a child the way he/she will go, when they grow they will not depart from it.
Lord help parents in doing our due diligence
Shalom

Thanks

  7. Father, please use this congress to add more multitude, both men and women to the church daily as many that are saved. Acts 5:14.
  8. Father as people praise you in this congress, put a permanent end to their hardship and hard life, let them find favour with men and with God. Acts 2:47.
  9. Father during this year Holy Ghost congress satisfy the thirsty, hungry and fainted soul, by feeding them with the fulness of your word. Isaiah 44:3.
  10. Father open the door of salvation for the unbelievers, and by their conversion cause great joy for as many that are added to the body of Christ. Acts 15:3-4.

The Word

Text: 2 Timothy 3:16-17

PREAMBLE-: Human History and Current behaviour

Genesis 1 – 3. An example from Eden

In the beginning, God created man in his own image. He puts him in a garden specially prepared for him, with instructions to keep the garden. (God’s plan for man is not to be idle and have nothing to do) He could also eat whatsoever fruit he likes from any tree but the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil was withheld from him. (He also made provisions for all man’s needs).

Unfortunately, man fell through the deception of the devil in the form of a serpent and eats the forbidden fruit thereby disobeying God and earning a curse and banishment from Eden, the paradise of God.

God loved us and He still does, (Gen. 3:8-9, John 3:16:) He loves to fellowship with men, as we also love to be with those that we love, even though He was compelled to punish man’s disobedience yet He did not banish him from His presence. (Genesis 4:3-7,9) but continuing in sin, causes man to be separated irrevocably from God (Isaiah 59:1-2) Cain was the first man who walked out on God. (Genesis 4:14-16)

This state of things continued through the ages up till now, the Bible tells the history of men, it tells of the punishments to the disobedient and the rewards for obedience.

In the world today, we may say that we have no sin because God has not given us any commandment that we must obey. But looking closely this will be wrong because God has given us the rules to live by in the Bible, whether we know them or not, whether we obey them is left to us but the consequences of obedience/disobedience is sure.

[Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Galatians 6:7

We as humans like to spend time with those we love, we like to hear them talk, we love to tell them what we feel about things, etc. Our relationship with God could easily be measured by the amount of time we spend in His presence, whether in prayer or study of His word or just in doing the things that pleases Him.

The question today is how do we know what pleases God, how do we know his commandments & his rules. Another yardstick of measuring our relationship with God is to ask ourselves how much we know of Him, from which we could easily infer: how much of the Bible we know shows how much we know of God since the Bible is God’s revelation of himself to man.

THE WORD.

The Bible is God’s inspired revelation of the origin and destiny of all things. Here heaven is opened and the gates of hell disclosed. It is the traveller’s map, the pilgrims staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldiers sword, and the Christian’s charter.

It is the power of God unto eternal salvation and the source of present help for body soul and spirit (Romans 1:16, John 15:7). Christ is its grand subject, man’s good is it’s design. And the glory of God its end. It is a mine of wealth, the source of health and a world of pleasure.

The Bible is God’s will or testament to men of all ages, revealing the plan of God for man here and now, and in the next life. It will be opened at the judgement; and it will last forever. It involves the highest responsibility; will reward for the least to the greatest of labours and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.

It is the record of God’s dealings with man in the past, present, and future. It contains His message of eternal salvation for all who believe in Christ, and eternal damnation for all who rebel against the gospel.

It is the only book that reveals the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories true, and its decisions immutable. It contains light to direct, spiritual food to sustain, and comfort to cheer. Man should read it to be wise, believe it to be safe and practice it to be holy.- Finnis J. Dakes

             Types of Prayer

             When to Pray

             Benefits of Prayer

          Conclusion

 Introduction:

Prayer is the act of communicating with God.  For communication to be effective, there must be an agreed upon set of symbols i.e. a language between the two parties.  In Christendom, the prescribed language is the language of faith, it is also the language of the supernatural.

              James 1:6-7; Heb 11:6

Prevailing Personal Pointed Persistent Prayers enables us to set the supernatural power of God at work in overcoming the natural and supernatural problems and situations of life.

             James 5:16b

Prayer is God’s commandment to man, in this study we aim to learn about the intricacies of prayer.

Principles of prayer:

Text: Mt 6:5-15

Throughout the bible, God calls on us to pray, with a promise that He will answer but often times than not, he attaches a condition that must be fulfilled.

Deductions:

1.      Mt 6:9…  Our Father which art in heaven: We must enter into the right relationship with God.  The lord will answer only those who are his children, who obeys his commandments

Jn 15:16, 7; 1 Jn 3:22

2.      Keep the channel of access to him free from sin and self: all manner of sin is an abomination to God, He is holy and cannot behold iniquity, hence cannot answer the prayers of sinners for the prayer of a sinner is an abomination to God

Ps 66:18; Isa 1:2-20; Prov 28:9; 21:7; James 4:3; Mt 6:5-8.

3.      Pray in faith, the natural child has faith in his father that when he asks he will receive.  God expects us to ask in faith, in fact, we can receive nothing from him except we ask in faith

James 1:6-8; Heb 11:6; Mk 11:24; Jer 29:13

4.      Asking According to the will of God, anything outside his will, he would not grant

James 4:3; Mt 20:21-22; Mk 14:36; Jon 4:3; Nu 11:15.

Thought: Mk 11:24

Ask and it shall be given unto you.  Have you fulfilled the condition that entitles you to an answer?  Is your relationship right with God and have you asked in faith according to His will?

Enemies of prayer

Text: Mt 6:5-15

Deductions:

1.      Anything that will contend against the kingdom of God or His will to be done on earth is an enemy to prayer since in prayer we must ask the Lord for his will and his kingdom.

2.      Mt 6:5,7…  The Flesh; self.

The flesh is weak towards the things of God but very strong to contend against the spirit.  We must seek to mortify our flesh, bring it under control so as to pray and pray aright.  Every prayer offered to please self is an abomination to God.

       Mk 14:32-38; Gal 5:17; 1 Pet 3:7; Mt 5:23-24.

Lopsided prayers; stressing petitional prayers and neglecting worship, adoration, praise, and thanksgiving; Spasmodic prayers, irregular, infrequent prayers are all due to the rule of the flesh.

3.      Mt 6:10,13…  The devil

Always in contention against the kingdom of God, but there is nothing he dreads so much as prayer, oft times he may laugh at our toiling, mock at our wisdom, but trembles when we pray.

Job suffered for a long time until he prayed.

The devil uses various devices to effect his will

Discouragement:  2 Cor 5:7; Num 32:9 Accusations:  Rev 12:9-10; Rom 8:1 Deceptions:  2 Cor 11:13-15 Hindrances:  Dan 10:11-12

Thought: 1 Jn 3:22

We can deduce that any dishonesty, vengefulness, arrogance, animosity, selfishness rears unpassable barriers between God and man and that every act and aspect of life, all duties, all privileges, all associations with no exception affects or facility and potency in the moment of prayer

Types of prayer

Text:  1 Tim 2:1

Prayer can be in groups as in a congregation, fellowship, family or a group of friends: Mt 18:19

Or personal: Mt 6:5-6

1.      Supplications:  To make a humble request (Collins dictionary)

Phil 4:6

2.      All manners of prayers:  all types of prayers

Eph 6:18

3.      Intercession:  To come between parties or act as mediator or advocate.  It is to get the ear of the king on behalf of another.  There are two parts to intercession:

a.      Warfare: to face Satan and the powers of evil in the name of Jesus on behalf of another.

Isa 59:14-17

b.      Travail:  To pray in the presence of the Lord with a deep burden, as a woman in labour pains:

Isa 53:10-12; Lk 22:42-44

4.      Thanksgiving:  Phil 4:6

5.      Praiseworship: Ex 34:8

6.      Petitional prayer: A formal request presented to a higher authority demanding a sort of action, it means to entreat to act.

Phil 4:6 (NIV)

When Where and How to pray

Text:  1 Thess 5:17

1.      Early morning,  afternoon, evening  Dan 6:10

2.      All night. Lk 6:12

3.      Allways

Where to pray:

Mt 6:5-6; Mk 1:35; Acts 12:12

How to pray:

             Bow:                  Ex 34:8

             Kneel:               Lk 22:41

On the face:              Mt 26:39; 1 Kings 18:42

             Standing:               Mk 11:25; 1 Kings 8:22

             Fervently:               James 5:16-17

             Earnestly:               1 sam 1:10-18

             Without ceasing: 1 Thess 5:17

According to the will of God: James 4:2-3; Rom 8:26

Thought: 1 Tim 2:1

Many Christians are so often defeated because they pray so little, forgetting that the secret of all failure is in our failure in secret prayer, which being the greatest power on earth moves the hand that moves the world.  The greatest thing we can do for God or for man is to pray, for we accomplish far more by our prayers than our work since prayer can do everything that God can do because when we pray God works.

Benefits of prayer

Text: Ex 33:12-19

1.      Obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need

Ex 33:13; Heb 4:16

2.      Enjoy the presence and protection of God

Ex 33:13; Ps 125:2; Zech 2:5

3.      Rest in the Lord

Ex 33:14; Heb 4:1

4.      Fullness of joy

Jn 16:24

5.      Sacrifice unto God

Rev 5:8; 8:3

6.      Kept from temptation

Mt 26:41

7.      Bring glory to God

Jn 14:13

Thought: Jn 15:7

Our strength, our faithfulness, depends on the grace of God, it depends on prayer, our joy depends on answered prayers (Jn 16:24) and if we will do much for God, we must ask much of God therefor we must be men of prayer.

Conclusion:

Every failure in prayer (all prayers are answered, but not necessarily how and when we desired nor are all granted) is a clarion call to search the heart to see what is wrong there.  For the promise is unmistakable in its clearness: if ye shall ask anything in my name that will I do (Jn 14:14).  God cannot lie and he delights to answer prayers, we glorify him by asking. (Jn 14:13)  Hence, he who prays puts not God to the test but his own spiritual life.  Answers to prayers do not depend on our feelings but upon the trustworthiness of Him who promised.

Has your prayer life been changed, is prayer to you a duty, a privilege, a pleasure, real joy, or necessity?

Sowing

She drove to the church hastily because she didn’t want to be late for the SERVICE not knowing the small WALLET containing her two phones and some cash was not in the big bag she carried.

Became worried when it was OFFERING time because it’s her custom to always GIVE to the Lord.

She stylishly tell the woman sitting next to her to give her any amount on her to drop for offering.

She looked at her and said Mummy are you sure of what you’re saying or you’re just pulling my legs because I know you well very.

I’m sure she replied, the woman reached out to her bag and gave her #500.

She was driving home after service when she saw the woman that helped her with the offering trekking, stopped bye and ask why she didn’t enter cab.

She said I gave you the LAST money on me, I can’t say NO to you because you want to give it to God.

The woman unlock her car doors and told her to come in, drove to her own house, gave her 20 thousand naira and some food stuffs.

She said Mummy, I only prayed for God’s blessing this morning and I didn’t know this is how it will come.

So God wanted me to SOW so that I can REAP, hmmm thank God you’re a fertile ground, my own offering was #200 but I release that #500 because of your status.

Life is give and take, you must always drop something to pick up another in the journey of faith.

God sometimes test our heart to see if we can handle what He’s about to release to us and many people have FAILED such tests.

The widow of Zarephath and her son would have died after that meal if she didn’t obey the word of Elijah to make provision for him first.

Don’t HARDEN your heart when God speaks to you.

Shalom!

The Death Of Her Husband Saved My Marriage

Susan attended a funeral service of her friend who lost her husband at Langata Cemetery.

Susan held her wailing friend strongly as the casket was lowered into the freshly dug grave.

Susan’s friend was screaming “My husband don’t leave me, please, don’t leave me!” as people looked on feeling sad for her.

The children were screaming too. Losing a father is not an easy thing.

If not for Susan, the friend would have thrown herself into the grave to be buried with her husband who died of suicide. Because, the husband found no meaning in life and he killed himself.

Susan remembered the many times the friend would say she is tired of her good for nothing husband and here she is screaming and feeling lost because the husband is no more.

The friend cried till she fainted. Susan and the rest people around carry the devasted woman to an ambulance for first aid.

As Susan watched the spectacle of broken hearts crying for a man who will never ever come back, Susan remembered her husband.

Susan remembered how much she takes her husband for granted.

How she talks to him however she pleases.

How she gives him prolonged silent treatment over issues they can easily resolve.

How she denied him sex many times. And she asked herself “What if it my husband that is buried today how would I feel?” Susan thought.

Susan remembered that she argued with her husband and he left the house with tension between them just because after all these years, he still leaves his plate in the living room instead of taking it to the sink after eating.

“God forbid that my husband die, but what if as my husband went out in anger and never returns and passes on, is this the last memory I would like my husband and I to have?” She thought again.

Susan began to remember all the wonderful things her husband has done in the past, which she never taught of before except complaining.

Now, in her heart, she begin to appreciates him for all his efforts no matter how small it was.

At that moment, she realise her areas of improvement, and said to herself “there is no other man I would rather share her life with than my loving husband.”

She thought of life without him and it scared her. And said, “I would rather have disagreements with my loving husband than to lose him to death. I prefer his sense of humour and laughter than to cry for losing him.”

That evening, after Susan took her widowed friend to a safe place, she passed by at the supermarket and bought her husband a card saying “Thank you for being in my life”

And when she got home, she cooked her husband’s favourite meal and asked her children to join her in celebrating her husband.

That night, her husband came home expecting a fight from Susan, but instead, he got greeting and hugs from Susan and the children.

He was welcomed with songs, dancing and laughter, cute drawings of him with warm messages from the children, a home cooked meal, pleasant conversations. And Susan’s husband bust into tears when Susan and the children told him how much they love him and then surrounded him to pray for him.

A grown man cried like a baby because of love. He felt needed and he asked them “Is today father’s day?”

Susan looked into his eyes and said, “No, it is lover day. Because, everyday is special with you around me from now on, we will do nothing but love each other.

I don’t know how long we have to live together, but it will not be wasted by fights, misunderstanding, complains and lack of appreciation.

In case you have forgotten, “I love you”

“I love you too” said Susan’s husband as he kissed and hugged Susan, the children dancing and cheering on.

Children long for a home where mom and dad give each other warmth.

Since then, both Susan and her husband have been a stronger and more loving couple after realizing that tomorrow is not guaranteed.

~ Sometimes the death of someone wakes us up to the reality of life.

~ Don’t let the death of your spouse wake you up to the reality of life, it will be too late.

~ God forbid, if your spouse die today, will you regret how you have been treating him/her?

~ Do you think living alone without your spouse will be joyful to you?

~ Will you be able to transfer your children to another man or woman whom they have not grown to know?

~ If you decide to be a single father or mother, will you be able to do the job alone?

~ Can you stand the pain of your kids asking why they don’t have a father or mother like others?

~ What is it that you cannot mend in your marriage?

~ No doubt its not easy, but prayerfully love your spouse while he/she lives. It rubs on the children as well.

So mend your home, don’t destroy it.

Dangers of over-protective parenting

By Gbenga Adebambo

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men” — Frederick Douglass

Rick Joyner said: “If our life is always easy, it’s because we are called to a lesser purpose.” So many times, I listen to parents boasting pompously that the reason they struggle so hard to get to where they are today is simply because their children wouldn’t have to pass through what they themselves went through. Such parents quickly forget that the main reason they are comfortable, rich and stable today is simply because of what they went through.

I am not disputing the fact that there are some unnecessary ‘sufferings’ that must be avoided in life, but we must all come to realise that we are simply the outcome of the processes we have been through. Each one of us has challenges, problems and hindrances that are peculiar to our destination. Against popular thought pattern, obstacles are not meant to stop us; they are actually meant to make us stronger.

I have come to observe that over-parenting or excessive interference of parents in the experiences of their children is gradually turning them into ‘endangered species.’ The core responsibility of parents must be to prepare their children to function as independent adults in society.

We must stop short-circuiting their process of growth and churning up emotionally stunted children to society. Parents should stop helping their children to ‘buy’ their way to the top. We must instill in them, the culture of paying their own price to get to the top.

What many parents fail to realise is that the more we help our children avoid facing their own challenges, the more we make them unfit for the future. Children who are not supervised to solve problems on their own end up becoming liabilities in life.

Parents must systematically design their “exit plan” from the lives of their children. We must face the blatant truth that we will not always be there for them. We must train them to think independently of us and to see opportunities in the midst of life’s challenges. Winston Churchill said: “Difficulties mastered are opportunity won.”

There is a particular illustration that I would like to use to drive home some salient points. The story and struggle of the emerging chick validates the fact that some experiences and struggles are needed to stabilise us for the future. It takes 21 days to hatch a chicken egg under the correct conditions. At a minimum of three times a day, the egg must be gently turned or ‘rotated’ to prevent the developing embryo from sticking to the inside of the egg using an instrument called incubator, but the mother hen does this same job in nature very well.

The mother hen provides the necessary temperature, feeds the feeble chicks and prevents them from predators. But for the chicks, every hatching process is meant to be a form of internal struggle to prepare them towards an uncertain future. The truth is that the length of our external life is determined by the depth of our internal struggle.

When the baby chick is ready to hatch, it is suicidal to assist. The first efforts to free itself are crucial to the chicken’s life cycle, and it will die if we interfere in this mysterious process responsible for developing survival instincts. The internal struggle is ‘divinely’ regulated in such a way that only the strongest chicks will survive it and even if we help the weak chicks to hatch, we are exposing them to a future that they have not been equipped to handle.

It has been experimentally validated that helping the chicks to hatch portends great danger to their future. Also, the chicks who went through the natural struggle to break the shell grew up to maturity and are fully equipped to surmount and adapt to environmental changes. Interfering with the process of hatching does far more damage than good; it has a disastrous effect on the future of the chick.

A great lesson to be learnt is that there are some things we go through in life that are needed for our preservation. Every stage of our life is needed to face a greater adversity in the future. Without our internal struggle, we become endangered species. Internal struggle ensures external stability.

It has been emphasised that the parent hen is responsible for providing an enabling environment to help the egg to hatch, through supplying warmth to the eggs, feeding the young chicks and protecting them from predators. But the hatching of eggs is solely the responsibility of the ‘emerging’ chick.

There are some adversities that come to fortify us towards a more dangerous “unseen.” The best way to help children out of future misery is to allow them pass through present challenges. Helping children is good, but it must be timely and with Godly wisdom. Great parents don’t do things for their children; they do things with their children.

Sometimes, we abuse our children when we do for them the things that they ought to have been prepared to do for themselves. Some parents go the extra mile to think for their children. When parents think for their children, they destroy the future ability of their wards to think independently of them.

Parents are meant to reason together with their children and not reason for them. Even the Almighty God said in Isaiah 1:18: “Come now, and let us reason together.” The story taught us in a great way that we must not pamper or tamper with the process of our children’s evolution and development. For the chick, it is simply 21 days of struggle, but a lifetime of bliss.

So many times, we abuse our children when we do for them what they are capable of doing for themselves. We must nip the dependency dilemma in the bud and provide the processes that evolve functional adults. The chick story testifies to the fact that the struggle of today is a prerequisite for our survival tomorrow. Wills Damien said: “The purpose of every difficult time is to place a demand on our creativity.”

We must allow our children to fully live and experience life. We must prepare them emotionally to live independently. Refusal to create a platform for their independency may cause them to cling to unsecure “anchors” that are detrimental to their future.

Parents must nurture the capacity of their wards to reach emotional equilibrium in the face of unanticipated change, unexpected disappointment and other life’s adversities. This would develop their sense of responsibility and ability to manage risks. We need more critical thinkers, not mechanised robots.

Parents must be mature enough to expose their children to life situations that will shape them for the future. A smooth sea never made a skilful sailor and every problem introduces a person to himself. Parents who tend to dominate their children’s choices eventually produce obedient, but dependent children.

We must encourage decision-making from an early age. We must subtly expose them to the risk of choices and consequences in life. We must subtly teach them to learn to take a certain measure of hardship without turning to socialising agents for help or comfort.

Our refusal to integrate this into their developmental process will indirectly teach them to seek attention from the wrong places. This is actually the origin of abusive relationships for most children. We must raise our children in a way that promotes self-confidence, adaptability, self-respect and optimism. In this way, we reduce their vulnerability. Over-protective parents raise over dependent adults.

We need to have strong faith in the processes of ‘evolution’ of our children. The appalling situation whereby some parents ‘buy’ academic results for their children must stop. Some parents even go to tertiary institutions to queue up in a line to help their children in the process of admissions and registration.

Some parents even manipulate the marital choices of their children and interrupt the NYSC posting arrangement of their wards. The world is not waiting for over-pampered children; the world is waiting for responsible adults.

WHAT IF CHRISTIANS WERE SUICIDE BOMBERS IN OUR CITIES?’

‘WHAT IF CHRISTIANS WERE SUICIDE BOMBERS IN OUR CITIES?’ – ARAB FEMALE JOURNALIST ASKED.

A female Arab journalist who lives in Qatar has penned a bold article that asks Muslims in the Middle East how they would respond if Christian suicide bombers struck their public markets, collapsed their tall buildings or tried to force Muslims to convert to Christianity.

Liberal Saudi journalist Nadine Al-Budair writes in Kuwait’s Al-Rai newspaper that Arab countries have refused to address the problem of terrorism and have yet to create a climate that matches the liberal, humanitarian climate of the West. She asked Muslims to consider what their world would be like if Christians the world over had responded to Muslims the way terrorists have spread radical Islam.

“Imagine a Western youth coming here and carrying out a suicide mission in one of our public squares in the name of the Cross. Imagine that two skyscrapers had collapsed in some Arab capital, and that an extremist Christian group, donning millennium-old garb, had emerged to take responsibility for the event, while stressing its determination to revive Christian teachings or some Christian rulings, according to its understanding, to live like in the time [of Jesus] and his disciples, and to implement certain edicts of Christian scholars,” Al-Budair writes in a translation of the editorial provided by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

Al-Budair asks her readers to imagine Christian priests calling Muslims infidels over loudspeakers and chanting that God has demanded their deaths. She also writes they should also consider what would happen if Arab countries had provided Westerners with entry visas, benefits, modern healthcare only to have them turn on their hosts to kill them in the name of religion – likely a reference to the San Bernardino attacks carried out in December 2015.

“These images are far from the mind of the Arab or Muslim terrorist because he is certain, or used to be certain, that the West is humanitarian and that the Western citizen would refuse to respond [in this manner] to the barbaric crimes [of the Muslim terrorists],” Al-Budair writes. “Despite the terrorist acts of Al-Qaeda and ISIS, we [Muslims] have been on [Western] soil for years without any fear or worry. Millions of Muslim tourists, immigrants, students, and job seekers [travel to the West] with the doors open [to them], and the streets safe [for them].”

She writes, however, that tolerance for Muslims is fading in the West because Muslims refuse to confront the problem of Islamic extremism. As evidence of this, she points to the presidential campaign of New York billionaire Donald Trump, who in a “scary declaration,” she writes, “demanded to bar Muslims from entering the U.S.”

Al-Budair wrote that Muslims do not have the right to condemn statements like those made by Trump without addressing the failures of Arab educational systems which teach jihad and hatred of the West in madrassas (Islamic schools) around the world. Al-Budair claims Muslim nations should apologize to the rest of the world.

Much of what she said about education in the Middle East was voiced a year ago by Jordan’s Queen Rania in addressing the United Arab Emirages UAE Government Summit in Dubai.

Al-Budair isn’t confident, however, that anyone will heed her call for tolerance.

“After all these farces, some Arab analyst comes out touting a pathetic message, and reciting the same words in his friend’s ear that he has repeated millions of times: ‘Those [Muslims who commit terrorism] do not represent Islam, but only themselves.’

“This is all we [know how to do] – absolve [ourselves] of guilt,” she wrote.

Al-Budair, who describes herself, as a feminist, last year encouraged Muslim women to flee their “benighted countries” for the safety, security and opportunity of the West.
